Title: Lowering a Fiat 600
Post by: ChrisD on February 10, 2005, 08:16:24 PM
I want to lower my Fiat 600, in order to get better handle of the car wile cornering.

The car has the stadar leaf spring in front. I am aware of a reverce eye leaf spring. Can anywane tell me where I can get one and how low the car gets with this installation?

Is there any lowering springs for the rear or I just have to cut off a part of the original springs?
The car has KONI shock absorbers installed.

Thanks for your help

I have had good luck with heating the leaves and having them re-arched.  This way, the spring eyes stay in the stock position.  This is a job for a spring shop, as they need to re-temper the steel.

The only trick is that you have to do some careful measuring to get the right amount of lowering.  Somehow, I managed to get it perfect the first time...

For lowering rear I made new coil springs. Here you can see

Dimension:
- normal length 185 mm
- load 4167 N = 128 mm
- load 5933 N = 107 mm
- load 7200 N = 91 mm
- increase of stiffness 65 %

And for front I have prepared these:

Hello Zdenek,
nice front-axle, produced by Fausto Vizza, Langenfeld/D. You can find some fotos from the production of this axle under www.vizzamotorsport.de . The factory price is lower than the bids by Ebay !

I made a leaf spring for my car with a heavier material but Kleber's suspension looks really nice!! Don't use the original leaf spring material with bigger tires, it'll bend.

Another way of lowering the front suspension, while at the same time adding some much needed negative camber, is to lower the two tabs on the bottom of the spindle housing.  Have a good welding shop add enough material to lower the hole 1 inch and move the hole 0.200 inch INBOARD.  This will give you an inch lower front suspension, WITHOUT reducing the total shock travel.  I have seen cars lowered so much that the shocks only have 1/4 inch travel left.  NOT GOOD.

Now that you have it lowered, you also need to look at the upper arm inclination.  Most cars like having the upper trunnion moved higher. We make a kit for doing this at Scuderia Topolino.  While you are at it, you may want to  reverse the ball joints so that the nut is on the bottom.  This eliminates much of the bump steer inherent in the front geometry.

Scuderia Topolino has a similar arrangement to that shown from Vizza Motorsport with a cross member and a-arms.  We complete our system with a front sway bar kit and also 20 position coilover shock absorbers.    We have the same 20 position adjustables for the rear as well.

Check out the parts page at www.scuderiatopolino.com for all of our parts.  If you would like a printed price list, then you can email us at info@scuderiatopolino.com and we will be pleased to send you one.
